The River Findhorn

What - Mild - Grade 3, 1/2 Day, £45.00 per person, Trip Fact Sheet
The middle section of the River Findhorn starting from Ardclach going as far as Randolph’s Leap is the ultimate canoeing and kayaking stretch of river for those that are new to the sport or for those that would like to hone their skills. We always run this section for canoeing, kayaking and ½ day rafting bookings if the conditions are right.

There is a bit of everything on this section of the River Findhorn from mini gorges to open rural stretches. There are also put in and egress points at Logie Bridge and Daltulich Bridge providing a nice range of distance options. The rapids are exciting and safe with plenty of calm pools between to recompose should a capsize occur.

The River Findhorn makes for an excellent introduction to canoeing and kayaking. Our fleet of inflatable boats are safe and forgiving which allows us to give you a taste of excitement by running some rapids which would otherwise take considerable time to learn in the conventional hard shell kayaks and canoes.

Kayaking on the River Findhorn, Scotland

Where
The Middle Findhorn is not quite as its name suggests in the true middle of the River Findhorn more so it is placed centrally from the town of Tomatin on the A9 to Inverness and the coastal town of Findhorn itself. Nestled between the upper and lower gorge sections of the River Findhorn the Middle section can be found near the small village of Furness at the junction of the B9007 and A939 in Morayshire.

Travelling distances from Nairn – 12 miles, Elgin – 20 miles , Aviemore – 26 miles, Inverness – 28 miles, Fort William – 86 miles, Aberdeen – 85 miles, Perth – 107 miles, Edinburgh – 150 miles and Glasgow – 164 miles.

Exciting canoeing on the Findhorn near Aviemore

When
The middle section requires water in the form of recent rainfall or snow melt as the river is quite wide and shallow in places with numerous different size rocks and boulders making it difficult if not incapable of navigation in low water conditions.

The most likely time of year for low water conditions are unfortunately the summer months and mid winter when the water is frozen and trapped in the Monadhliath Mountains that feed the river. Ace always want to give you the best trip possible so if the there is water in this section then this is where you will be! Spring and Autumn are likely times of year to have the right level of water.

How
Price is £45.00 per person.  Bookings can be made by calling 01479 810 510, Book Online, enquire by email or Drop into the Booking Office.

Trips usually start each day by meeting at 10:00am at our office in Aviemore or you can meet at the River at 10:45am. You will usually be back to Aviemore by around 2:00pm. Limited transport is available to the river. Please let us know if you require transport. For larger groups requiring transport we recommend; local coach service Bremners and for self drive Focus Vehicle Rentals.

Family fun canoeing the rapids of the Findhorn

Why
The River Findhorn translates as the White River which is one of the many misnomers to be found in relation to this magical artery of life. The waters are as black as tar from tannin in the heather moors. As the river slips its way downstream turning white at the frequent rapids, it twists and turns through stunning countryside scenery. Known as the River of beauty cutting though great forests and outcrops of sculptured Gneiss and Granite this is one of the most picturesque rivers in Scotland.

Ace run more trips on the River Findhorn than everyone else put together. We live by it and know it intimately. We are the only outfit that runs the river all year round at any level on all sections. We aim to provide ensure your experience is a personalised adventure and not a commercial cattle market. We are committed to provide the best possible service and experience in an exciting friendly safe environment.
