Bungee jumping comes in as many forms of doing as it is known, sometimes called bungy, bungi, bunge, bungie or just plane crazy!

So why all the different names?  Bungee is a word derived from English West Country dialect recorded by James Jennings in 1825 and meaning “something thick and squat” (a little like the New Zealand born Killiecrankie Highland Fling Bungee founder Murray Trail ;-))  Around 1930 Bungee became a word used to describe a rubber eraser.  New Zealand is famed for being the inventors of Bungy and certainly A J Hacket can lay claim to being the first commercial operator of Bungy. The word Bungy is used by the Kiwis to describe an elastic strap, better known in the UK as a bungy cord.

Believe it or not the first modern day bungee jumps happened right here in the UK at the Clifton Suspension Bridge organised by members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club.

Forms of bungee jumping vary from using a thick vine as the bungy for passage to manhood by the islanders of Pentecost in Vanuatu famously documented by David Attenborough, through to crane, bridge and purpose built fixed structures for commercial operations.  Hot air balloons and helicopters can also be used for a bungie jump.
